It’s one week til Mother’s Day! Need a recommendation?

Simone says: Mary Oliver’s A Thousand Mornings is an easy choice. “I am so glad to be alive. I am so glad to be loving and loved”. Happy Mother’s Day! Thanks Mom! The Sugar Frosted Nutsack may well be a great M.D.pick, but I must admit I chose it without having read it. Instead the image of my mom cracking up at it’s inclusion forced my hand. Marbles is pleasing artistically, and pulls the heartstrings with the recounting of Forney’s struggle with her mood disorder. Art, heartstings and Mom, a natural triad. Russ & Daughters is a totally New York book for a totally New York mom. It’s a classic tale from the Lower East Side about the Russ family’s choice — which was radical at the time — to engage their daughters fully in the family business.

In which Jenn moderates a discussion with authors Paolo Bacigalupi (Drowned Cities, The Windup Girl), Lauren Beukes (The Shining Girls, Zoo City), and Jesse Bullington (The Folly of the World, The Enterprise of Death) about medieval vs. future, violence and “grimdark” in fantasy and sci-fi, cosplay, and why Bronies get a bad rap.

riverheadbooks:

Riverhead Books has the honor of publishing incredible fiction by talented female writers from around the world. Head over to our Instagram and leave a comment for a chance to win a collection of novels by Helen Oyeyemi, Meg Wolitzer, Emma Straub, Danielle Evans, Dina Nayeri, Danzy Senna and Catherine Chung.

After seeing book lists like this and promotions like this, it is doing my soul good to Riverhead celebrating some of the AMAZING writers they publish who aren’t straight white dude over 70. Enter this contest, follow Riverhead, and/or run-don’t-walk to your favorite bookstore and check these authors out!

All of the yes.

You’ve read books, right? Of course you have! You might even have a t-shirt to prove it. We’re starting a new series of posts, called I’ve Read Books, featuring picks from our customers, and we want you to send us yours. Here’s how:

  • Take a picture of yourself (or your dog, your toddler, your gerbil) with a favorite book. New? Old? Recommended by WORD staff? Found by chance? Anything goes, as long as we can also see a WORD bookmark in the picture.
  • Write a recommendation for it. Why did you love it? Who else might? Who would you give it to? Your blurb can be as short as a couple sentences, or as long as a couple paragraphs.
  • You can submit it here, or send the picture and the blurb to info@wordbrooklyn.com, with I’ve Read Books in the subject line. If you’re submitting via email, make sure to include how you’d like to be identified in the post.

Booksellers are standing by and awaiting your submissions — except for when we’re sleeping or reading, of course.
